Development director Margus Ameerikas of Baltic Agro in America discussed the ongoing carbon sequestration and emission debate. Data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that a significant portion of carbon storage occurs within the soil. Specifically, the IPCC reports that only 17 percent of carbon found in wood is actually present in the wood itself, while 83 percent resides within the soil.

This soil carbon can remain stored for hundreds of years, accumulating through either direct carbon content increases or the growth of the humus layer.
