Asian Elephant Escapes Zoo, Returned Safely Albuquerque, NM – On March 29th, a 52-year-old Asian elephant at the ABQ BioPark briefly left his enclosure and traversed the zoo grounds. The incident occurred in the morning and prompted the immediate activation of the zoo’s emergency protocol. According to officials, the huge elephant, identified as a member of the Asian elephant herd, exited his yard prior to the opening of the zoo. He proceeded calmly around the zoo territory before staff were able to safely recapture him. Responding personnel acted swiftly, and the elephant was returned to his yard without incident.
