Pärnu Health Center Launches Innovative Geriatric Treatment Program

Pärnu VIV Livingu Health Center has initiated a new inter-disciplinary treatment program focused on supporting the active lifestyles of its elderly residents. The initiative addresses the growing needs of Estonia’s aging population and seeks to mitigate rising healthcare costs. The program’s development is spearheaded by Jaak Aru, a geriatrician trained in Germany, who brings extensive experience in establishing ambulatory and inpatient geriatric departments within German hospitals.

Aru recognized the challenges facing Estonia’s healthcare system as the population ages and sought to implement solutions mirroring successful models in Europe. The program integrates a range of specialists, including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, to provide comprehensive health care tailored to individual needs. The focus is on maintaining mobility, cognitive function, and overall well-being for residents.

“Our goal is to enable seniors to remain as independent and active as possible for as long as possible,” stated a representative from the health center. The program’s implementation reflects a broader effort to adapt Estonia’s healthcare infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of its aging population. [Photo: Mailiis Ollino/Pärnu Postimees]
