Google’s mapping service is exploring ways to reduce fuel consumption by suggesting more efficient routes. In the United States and Canada, users who select diesel-powered vehicles are directed along highways, while hybrid vehicles are directed onto side roads. To date, approximately half a million cubic meters of carbon dioxide have been saved through this approach.

Google poses the question of whether a user would opt for a route that takes nine minutes longer but saves approximately 30 percent of expected fuel consumption, or prioritize a faster journey. The company intends to soon offer a selection of eco-routes in Europe through Google Maps, building on the success of similar initiatives in the US and Canada that have already significantly reduced emissions into the atmosphere.
