General Electric, which is undergoing a significant restructuring, is set to divide itself into three separate companies over the next several years. The most profitable segment of the industrial conglomerate is its aviation business, currently known as General Electric Aviation, and will be rebranded as GE Aerospace. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, air travel demand was experiencing growth, with passenger numbers increasing by approximately five percent annually.

Simultaneously, sales of GE aircraft engines were rising at a rate of six percent per year.
