Estonia’s best female black artist Irene Kivaste and award-winning Italian black artist Walter Maffei will present special black art performances this weekend in Tartu. The events, titled “Mystery of the Earth,” will take place at the ELU24 gallery. Kivaste, who has exhibited publicly in Estonia for four years, describes black art as a niche genre. “We, black artists, are few,” she stated. “We attend public shows, as well as company events, anniversaries, and weddings.” This weekend’s performances include Italian artist Walter Maffei, whom Kivaste met in Italy where she resided for several years. Maffei, 54, began his black art practice at age 11. “In Italy, when I was a kid, there was terrorism. And I remember people, my parents, crying. It was a bad time for Italy. But in Italy, there was one black artist and every time he appeared on TV, people would forget their problems for a moment. I thought to myself, I want to be like him in the future. Not because he’s a black artist, but because he has the power to give people joy.” Maffei will be in Tartu for three days, performing at the Estonian Agricultural Museum from Friday to Sunday.
