Estonian Authorities Ban Ice Activities on Inland Waterways

Across Estonia, authorities have issued a prohibition on all activities on inland waterways due to hazardous ice conditions, effective Monday. The Salvation Army is strongly advising against any attempts to venture onto the ice. “Ice conditions have become dangerously unstable and pose a significant risk to anyone attempting to use the waterways,” stated Viktor Saaremets, deputy head of the Salvation Army’s rescue agency.

“Despite the potential appearance of thick ice, the underlying conditions are severely compromised, and multiple accidents have been reported in recent days.”

The prohibition covers all inland waterways, including those in Harjumaa and Western Virumaa. Recent incidents highlight the unpredictable nature of the ice, emphasizing that visual thickness does not guarantee safety. Rescue agencies are urging the public to heed these warnings and refrain from engaging in any activities on the ice.

The safety of individuals utilizing inland waterways is the primary concern. This ban follows a period of rapidly deteriorating ice conditions, prompting a precautionary measure to prevent further potential incidents. Fishing and other recreational activities on these waterways are suspended until conditions improve.

  1. This is a disappointing development for winter sports enthusiasts, but prioritizing safety is undoubtedly the right decision.
