A ground penetrating radar reveals the ancient river system that lies beneath Mars’ surface. Photo: NASA/JPL/UCLA/UiO/ETH Zurich NASA rover Perseverance found evidence of an even more ancient and extensive river system using ground penetrating radar, which indicates that water flowed on the Red Planet for a much longer time than previously thought. This significantly expands the window of when life may have existed on Mars.

NASA’s Perseverance rover, which is exploring a dry landscape on Mars that was once a flowing river system, is studying the dried-up terrain of a Martian crater that is inhabited only by robots.
