The Social Commission will discuss a draft bill proposing an increase in state child support payments and a reduction in child support subsidies on May 14th. The bill, effective January 1, 2024, stipulates a monthly increase in child support from €100 to €200 for children when the obligated parent fails to provide sufficient support. Estonian single-parent families experience the highest rates of relative poverty, with approximately one-third of these households living below the poverty line.

The new support payments will be €450 per month for families with three to six children and €650 per month for families with seven or more children. Amendments to the subsidy amounts will remain higher than levels from the previous year, with families with three to six children receiving €150 per month and families with seven or more children receiving €250 per month. The discussion is being overseen by the Social Commission, and Signe Riisalo reported on the topic.
