Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday that General Lieutenant Jennie Carignan will lead the country’s armed forces for the first time. Carignan will be promoted to the rank of general and will assume command on July 18, succeeding General Wayne Eyre. The appointment marks the first time in Canadian history a woman has held the position of commander-in-chief.
