Baltic News Calls on Latvians to Enlist in the Military

The Latvian Ministry of Defense has stated that it did not send out SMS messages requesting citizens to enlist in the military. Recent social media reports indicated that the Latvian Defense Forces were distributing such messages, including dates and durations of enlistment. The Ministry of Defense confirmed the circulated message originated from the @Latvijas_armija Twitter account and that no such messages are currently planned.

They advise citizens to verify information through official Ministry of Defense channels on social media. The Ministry has previously announced that, following the introduction of mandatory military service in Latvia, citizens will be compulsorily called to enlist starting in the second half of 2023. The initial recruitment drive will begin early next year, targeting individuals aged 18-27, who will have the option to enlist voluntarily.

Military service will be 11 months in duration, with the first six months dedicated to training and skill acquisition, followed by completion of service within a military unit.
