Ed Sheeran admitted to experiencing suicidal thoughts after the deaths of close friends, Jamal Edwards and Shayne Ward. In an interview with The Rolling Stone, the singer revealed he grappled with feelings of hopelessness following the 2022 death of businessman Jamal Edwards, who succumbed to heart failure related to alcohol and substance use. A month later, Sheeran learned of the death of Australian cricket player Shayne Ward, who died from a heart attack.

“I always had real failures in my life. I felt that I no longer wanted to live. I fell into depression, which was selfish, considering that I was a father of two children,” Sheeran stated.

His wife, Cherry Sikorman, encouraged him to seek therapy, which he credited with helping him manage suicidal thoughts. “People think it’s strange to hire a psychotherapist in England. I think it’s very useful to have the opportunity to talk to someone and just vent without feeling guilty about it,” Sheeran added.

The artist also noted that the deaths prompted him to cease drug use and reduce his alcohol consumption after these events.
