Rahapesu Andmebüroo Pursues Development of Large-Scale Data Repository The Rahapesu Andmebüroo (Anti-Money Laundering Bureau), currently led by Matis Mäeker, is seeking to establish a comprehensive data repository within its organization. This initiative is driven by a forthcoming law (eelnõu 640) currently under consideration in the Riigikogu, which will authorize the bureau’s development of a mass-monitoring data base. Legal experts Karmen Turk of Triniti and Tambet Toomela of Eversheds Sutherland have highlighted the key aspects of this planned development. The bureau intends to create a substantial database, referred to internally as an “andmeladu” (data warehouse), capable of facilitating extensive data tracking. The purpose of this undertaking is to bolster the bureau’s capabilities in combating money laundering activities. Details regarding the scope and specific data sources for the repository are still under development, pending the final passage of eelnõu 640. Toomela and Turk emphasized the importance of careful consideration regarding data privacy and oversight within the framework of this new system.
