Eduard Vilde’s “Külmale maale” (1947) emerged during his time living in Berlin between 1890 and 1892, while attending lectures given by liberal and social democratic figures. According to literary scholar and Tallinn Literature Center education curator Anneli Leinpere, it was during this period that Eduard Vilde (1865–1933) discovered a calling to delve into social critique.
