Jon Fosse, the Norwegian writer, was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 5, as announced by the prize committee. A photograph was taken on that day in Fosse’s hometown of Bergen, located near the sea. The announcement followed calls to describe Fosse as a “magician and a dreamer.” Translator Sigrid Tooming referred to Fosse as a magician shortly after the prize was announced (PM, October 6).

Similarly, the chairman of the Writers’ Union, Tiit Aleksejev, stated in a television interview that Fosse is a magician. The plays of Fosse are among the most performed in Europe.
