♪ Listen 0:00 The discussion regarding party participation in televised pre-election debates has reignited ahead of the 14th Saeima elections. The “Republika” party has contacted the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP) concerning the National Broadcasting Council’s (NBC) decision to limit invitations to major TV debates to parties with the highest ratings. “Republika” representatives argue that party ratings are not objective and fair, asserting that all political forces should be afforded the opportunity to participate in these debates. Elviss Ozols, a “Republika” board member, stated that the NBC’s decision to exclude certain parties from planned debates “undermines democracy and hinders the chances of new political forces to enter parliament.” Anita Jansone, a representative from the NBC, responded to the criticism, explaining that the pre-election TV broadcasts for the 14th Saeima elections are structured to ensure “diverse, suitable for the audience’s interests, and allows the public to make their choice in elections with a sense of responsibility.” Jansone emphasized that all candidate parties in the 14th Saeima elections have been given opportunities to participate in the scheduled morning and afternoon broadcasts. Jansone cited decisions from the Administrative District Court and the Supreme Court, which have recognized the NBC’s right to determine the order of pre-election broadcasts, as a matter of editorial freedom. Representatives of public television explained that candidate lists do not have the right to demand specific broadcast times. The NBC maintains broad freedom in determining the order of pre-election broadcasts and dividing broadcast time, aiming to provide diverse content suitable for the audience and fostering responsible electoral choices. The 14th Saeima elections are scheduled for the first day of October.
