Rice University researchers have developed EyeDAR, a low-cost radar sensor designed to assist self-driving vehicles. The device replaces complex calculations with analog hardware and communicates with automobiles using radar waves. Cities could potentially install EyeDAR sensors on street signs, traffic markers, and intersections to create an additional safety network for autonomous vehicles.

A significant challenge for self-driving cars is navigating in dense fog or heavy rain, conditions that can obscure visibility to the point where even a human observer cannot discern the road. EyeDAR provides a clear and precise image in these challenging conditions, resembling a small orange citrus fruit.
