Rice University researchers have developed EyeDAR, a low-cost radar sensor designed to assist autonomous vehicles. The device replaces complex calculations with analog hardware and communicates with vehicles using radar waves. City governments could potentially deploy EyeDAR on street signs, traffic markers, and intersections, creating an additional safety layer for self-driving cars.

A significant challenge for autonomous vehicles is navigating in dense fog or heavy rain, conditions that can obscure visibility to the point where even a human observer cannot discern the road. EyeDAR provides a clear and precise image in these challenging conditions, resembling a small orange citrus fruit.
