A Bulgarian police officer was killed and another injured after being shot at the border with Turkey on November 8, 2022, at 13:34. The incident occurred near the village of Golyam Derventi, along the 259-kilometer border region between Bulgaria and Turkey, which is partially secured by a barbed wire fence. According to officials, a 30-year-old police officer was fatally shot while directing a light beam towards Turkey after a section of the border fence was breached. A soldier accompanying the patrol was able to take cover behind the vehicle. Initial reports indicate approximately 10-15 shots were fired through the fence before a group of individuals retreated back into Turkey. The incident occurred amidst a significant increase in border crossings. Bulgarian border police reported over 80,000 crossings in the first eight months of 2022, a substantial rise from the 40,000 recorded in the previous year. In response, Bulgaria has deployed an additional 800 police officers and 200 soldiers to bolster security along the border. Turkish authorities have confirmed they will investigate and hold those responsible. Earlier this year, in August, two Bulgarian police officers were killed in a separate incident involving a bus carrying migrants near Burgas.
