RUS.POSTIMEES.EE ЭСТОНИЯ Пять медицинских проблем, о которых люди стесняются говорить Five medical issues that people often hesitate to discuss include digestive problems, intimate health concerns, fungal infections of the feet and nails, questions related to contraception, and mental health issues. Individuals frequently encounter medical problems that they find uncomfortable or difficult to discuss, often due to embarrassment or fear of judgment. However, pharmacists are always prepared to offer professional advice and practical solutions on a confidential basis. Pharmacist Alexander Sej of the Südameapteek network highlights five health issues for which people most often hesitate to seek help. 1. Digestive Problems: Digestive disorders manifest in various ways, including bloating, diarrhea, chronic constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome. Pharmacies offer remedies for both mild and severe issues. Treatments for constipation include fiber supplements and medications to stimulate intestinal motility. Simethicone, chamomile, or dill tea can alleviate bloating and gas. Antacids treat heartburn, while medications protect the stomach lining from inflammation. Probiotics are often used to restore gut flora. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a doctor is necessary, but initial assistance can be obtained at a pharmacy. 2. Intimate Health Concerns: Men and women often avoid discussing health issues related to the intimate zone. Common complaints include itching, discharge, unpleasant odor, or dryness. Causes can include overly aggressive cleaning products, pH imbalance, candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections. Pharmacies can provide treatments for mild infections or preventative measures. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, a doctor’s consultation is recommended. 3. Foot and Nail Fungus: According to Sej, people often seek help with nail or foot fungal infections when the condition is advanced. Symptoms include dry skin, itching, redness between the toes, thickening, and yellowing of the nail plate. Treatment involves antifungal creams, solutions, or sprays applied to affected areas. Nail fungus may require prolonged treatment, including specialized polishes or tablets. It’s important to disinfect shoes and maintain hygiene to prevent re-infection. 4. Contraception Questions: Many people feel uncomfortable asking about emergency contraception (SOS pills). “SOS pills are a means of emergency contraception that helps prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex. The drug must be taken within the first 12 hours, but no later than 72-120 hours, depending on the product,” says Sej. He emphasizes that SOS pills do not replace regular contraception methods, and pharmacists are prepared to provide detailed instructions without judgment. 5. Mental Health Issues: Increasingly, people are experiencing anxiety and sleep disturbances, but they don’t know where to seek initial help. “To alleviate mild anxiety or insomnia, we recommend medications based on melatonin, lavender extract, valerian, or calming teas. If symptoms persist, we refer people to a specialist,” explains Sej. For those uncomfortable with a personal visit, anonymous phone consultations or online chats are available. Medications can also be ordered for home delivery.
