Postimee Eesti Clinic began Covid-19 vaccination with new vaccines on Friday. The Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty and Moderna Spikevax vaccines are two-valent and designed to protect against Covid-19. “The initial SARS-CoV-2 virus has developed over time several strains – for example, alpha, beta, gamma, delta.

One of these is currently the widely spread omicron virus strain. The new two-valent Covid-19 vaccine contains mRNA from both the initial virus and the omicron virus strain,” explained Matti Maimets, director of the Infection Control Service of the University Hospital of Tartu. The new two-valent vaccine provides additional protection, though existing monovalent Covid-19 vaccines remain effective.

The new vaccines can be administered as booster doses, and the primary vaccination course continues to utilize the monovalent vaccines currently in use. Tiina Tederi, coordinator of the clinic’s vaccination team, identified individuals over 60 and those aged 12 or older with increased risk of severe Covid-19 due to chronic diseases, as well as residents of nursing homes and healthcare workers, as a priority group. A second booster dose is recommended at least six months after the last dose or following a Covid-19 infection.

The first booster dose is recommended for individuals over 18 years of age, and for Covid-19 risk groups aged 5 to 17. Vaccination rates vary across Estonia; the highest rate, 52%, is found in the Hiiumaa region, while rates in Ida-Viru are considerably lower at 28%.
