Polish skier Andrzej Stankala announced on New Year’s Day that he is gay for the first time. The announcement followed a “huge loss” that profoundly impacted his life. “I have been thinking for a long time about whether I would be able to write these words.

For many years I lived in fear of hiding who I really am because I was afraid that it would destroy me. What I am writing now is the hardest thing in my life. For years I lived in secrecy, afraid that I would have to give up everything I had achieved.

But I want you all to know the real me – I am gay,” wrote 29-year-old Stankala in social networks. The Pole revealed that his life changed in 2016 with the meeting of Damian, whom he and Damian loved and enjoyed life together. This relationship was tragically cut short in November of last year with Damian’s death.

“To describe this pain is simply impossible. Every day spent without him is a real battle, but at the same time a reminder of how much I loved him,” Stankala wrote. Stankala debuted in the World Cup series in 2015, achieving notable success in team competitions.

He secured a silver medal at the Zakopane 2021 World Cup series and also earned a team bronze in the 2020 World Cup series in ski jumping. He primarily competed in the Continental Cup series during the 2020/21 season.
