Twenty-four African countries’ leaders issued a call to wealthy nations to meet previously pledged financial aid for climate change adaptation. The statement followed a three-day meeting in Cairo, Egypt, concluding September 10, 2022. The leaders urged developed industrial countries to fulfill commitments to double adaptation funding for Africa, particularly in response to increasing droughts and floods.

Earlier this week, African nations criticized the lack of fulfillment from a meeting in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where adaptation strategies were to be discussed. “We call on developed countries to fulfill their climate and development funding pledges,” the joint statement read. The forum precedes the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, scheduled for two months later.

UN former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that African countries account for approximately three percent of global CO2 emissions, yet the continent is disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change.
