Estonian judoka Juhan Mettis secured a gold medal in the veteran’s category over 100 kg at the World Championship held in Poland on September 10, 2022. Mettis achieved victory against all opponents throughout the competition. “The competition went very well,” Mettis commented.

“Previous experience was helpful and preparation was good. The most important opponent was the third round opponent Gurban Mammadli, who fought with very good technique and he had to give 100 percent from me.”

Mettis won his first match against Georgian judoka Nodar Andguladze and his second match against German judoka Artur Vartanjan with an ippon. In the third round, he defeated Aseri Mammadli with a waza-ari.

His fourth opponent, British judoka Terry Dixon, was also defeated with an ippon. The current World Championship featured the largest-ever Estonian judo veteran team, with seven athletes participating, including two women, marking the first time they had been represented. Mettis began judo training at the age of seven with the Tartu DO sports club.

He joined the Estonian judo team in 2009, receiving training from coaches including Olympic bronze medalist Aleksei Budõlin. Mettis is a multi-talented Estonian judoka with numerous medals earned at major championships.
