A Tallinn resident, Ivar Kaldasauna, has raised concerns about the current practice of weekly food waste collection, arguing that the transportation process itself diminishes the environmental benefits of recycling. The existing system involves a diesel-powered truck collecting one to two kilograms of food waste per trip, conducted once a week. The driver replaces the collection container with a biodegradable liner, which ultimately ends up in a landfill or incinerator. Kaldasauna believes the frequency of transport should be reduced to mitigate the environmental impact associated with the truck’s operation and the disposal of the liners. “It seems like the environmental impact of the trucks themselves is overshadowing the value of this small-scale food waste collection.” Reply
