The Tartu University Natural History Museum is hosting a mushroom exhibition next week, featuring over 90 species of fungi currently on display. The exhibition, open through tomorrow, showcases both cap fungi and wood fungi, many of which are prevalent in Estonia following a dry and hot summer. Curator Külli Kalamees-Pani noted the diverse collection includes edible species such as puffballs, boletes, chanterelles, and virescens, alongside some poisonous mushrooms.

Museum staff collected all specimens for this year’s exhibition, with the most distant arriving from Saaremaa. Kalamees-Pani reported receiving inquiries about potentially hazardous mushrooms, advising visitors to discard any preserved poisonous fungi. Despite the summer’s conditions, Kalamees-Pani anticipates a continued abundance of fungi in the forest next week, observing that the forest ecosystem typically recovers by the third week of September, a period necessary for fungal reproduction.
