Tanel Kiik, Tallinn deputy mayor, will leave his position to serve in the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament, on March 22nd, 2023. Kiik announced the decision via social media. “Sometimes life requires difficult choices.

One of them is now,” he stated. “I see that I could contribute to the advancement of Estonian life as a Tallinn deputy mayor and as a representative of the Riigikogu, and I will realize my mandate in the elections.”

Kiik was elected with 2070 votes in the Haabersti, Põhja-Tallinn and Kristiine constituencies. He indicated that he has informed the party chairman and Tallinn Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart of his decision.

Kiik plans to contribute to the Keskerakond faction in the Riigikogu and to the role of opposition leader. He believes he can offer expertise in social and health fields and be a constructive partner to a potential coalition government, drawing on his previous roles as social and health minister and labor minister. Previously, in September of last year, Kiik had stated his intention to remain as deputy mayor until the next local elections.

He cited significant changes in the political landscape and consultations with colleagues as the reason for his shift to the Riigikogu. Kiik expressed gratitude to Mayor Kõlvart and other members of the Tallinn city council. He highlighted his efforts to develop free public transport, promote human-friendly mobility, enhance crisis readiness in city buildings, implement energy-saving measures, and support Ukrainian municipalities and war refugees.

“I received confirmation that dedicated and professional people work in the Tallinn city system, who are working hard to improve the city environment and raise the well-being of city residents. Thank you all for your cooperation and trust!” he added.
