Merle Lauri, a resident of Kohtla-Järve, has dedicated her life to assisting abandoned cats. Operating under the NGO Kurrmäu, established five years ago, Lauri provides temporary shelter for cats born on the streets or those left without owners. Her three-room apartment serves as a temporary haven until suitable, caring homes can be found for the animals. Lauri has personally interacted with and documented the care of dozens, if not hundreds, of cats throughout her work, remembering each individual. Peeter Lilleväli / Põhjarannik provided the photograph of Merle Lauri.
