Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022. The news was initially announced by Buckingham Palace shortly before noon, marking the end of a 70-year reign. Following the announcement, King Charles III was formally proclaimed as monarch at 4:00 PM GMT.

A period of national mourning commenced, with flags flown at full mast until the Queen’s body was due to arrive in London. The Queen’s body was transported by Royal Train from Balmoral to Edinburgh Waverley Station, where it was met by members of the public. Elizabeth’s remains were then taken to St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh for a private service.

From Edinburgh, the procession continued to Balliol Station, before arriving at Waverley Station in London. A lying-in-state was established at Westminster Hall, allowing the public to pay their respects. Hundreds of thousands of people visited the hall to view the Queen’s coffin, adhering to strict queuing protocols.

The state funeral took place on September 19, 2022, at Westminster Abbey. The service was attended by heads of state and representatives from around the globe. Following the funeral, Elizabeth’s remains were transported to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, for a committal service.
