Estonian Director Ingomar Normet Dies at 76

Ingomar Normet, a prominent Estonian theatrical educator and director, died on September 8, 2022, at the age of 76. Normet was a significant figure in Estonian theatre and television. Born on June 8, 1946, in Tallinn, Normet graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Theatre Arts (MGUTIS) in 1969 specializing in directing.

He subsequently studied at the St. Petersburg Institute of Theatre and Cinematography and the Helsinki Theatre University. Normet’s career began with roles as a director and principal actor at the Endla Theatre.

In 1991, he became the chief director of the ETV television theatre. He later served as a professor and director at the EMTA Drama School, beginning in 1996. Throughout his career, Normet directed over 110 performances in Estonia and Finland for ETV television.

He also led four classes at the EMTA Drama School, establishing a theatre library and preparing future directors. Normet held leadership positions with the Estonian Directors’ Association and the Estonian Cultural Endowment, serving as chairman from 1993 to 1995. He received several accolades, including the Ants Laulu Prize, the Order of the White Star 4th Class, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

His son, journalist and television presenter Mart Normet, shared a poignant tribute online, referencing his father’s use of virtual reality. “On September 8, 2022, Ingomar Normet, director, stepped into another reality,” Mart Normet wrote, accompanied by a photograph of his father wearing virtual reality glasses. “He did so with his characteristic modesty – he welcomed Queen Elizabeth into the gates of heaven before entering himself, without fanfare or concern.”
