Mart Normet, a prominent Estonian theatre and film teacher and director, died on September 8th at the age of 76. His son, TV presenter Mart Normet, shared a heartfelt condolence and a photograph depicting his father wearing virtual reality glasses from four years prior. “The photo shows him in virtual reality.

Today at 20, he stepped into another reality,” Mart Normet wrote in the media on Thursday evening. “And he did it with the modestness he was known for – letting the Queen of England enter before the sky gates and then he went back without much shouting and screaming. We miss him!”

Ingo Normet was born on June 8, 1946, in Tallinn.

He graduated from the Moscow State Theatre Institute (GITIS) in 1969 with a degree in directing and subsequently studied at the Leningrad Theatre and Cinematography Institute and the Helsinki Theatre and Film School. Following his education, Normet worked as a director and head of the main performance at the Endla theatre. In 1991, he became the head of the TV theatre of ETV.

Later, he served as a professor at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, holding the position of head of the department and professor from 1996. Normet also taught at several European theatre schools and was involved in over 110 productions in Estonia and Finland and at ETV TV theatre. From 1993 to 1995, he headed the Estonian Theatre Directors Union and served as Vice President of the Estonian Cultural Foundation.
