Estonia Winter Tire Use Begins Sunday, Mandatory December 1 Changing tires will be permitted starting Sunday, October 15, 2023, with mandatory use set for December 1. The Department of Transport announced this in a press release, advising drivers to change tires proactively due to potential ice formation on roads despite daytime temperatures. Even on major highways and during daylight hours, nighttime frosts can lead to icy conditions. “We recommend paying attention to how much, when, and on which roads you drive,” stated Jurgo Vahtra, head of the technical department of the Department of Transport. “If you have to drive long distances on different types of roads early in the morning or late at night, you should not wait too long to change tires.” Driving on slippery roads with summer tires poses a risk to driver and other road user safety. The Department of Transport emphasizes that winter tires enhance vehicle stability. Winter tires should have a tread depth of more than 3 mm. Winter tires can be used in Estonia from October 15 to March 31. Exceptionally, winter tires can be used from October 1 to April 30 when winter road and weather conditions are present. Lugged tires can be used year-round.
