Greenpeace activists prevented the unloading of Russian gas at the Nynashamn LNG terminal in Sweden on Thursday. The protest, initiated by the terminal owner Gasum and Greenpeace, began around 10 a.m. and lasted approximately five hours.

Activists boarded the terminal’s loading cranes and deployed boats to prevent the docking and unloading of an LNG tanker registered in the Netherlands. The sailboat “Witness” and accompanying kayaks were also utilized to disrupt the operation. Protest materials displayed messages reading “Stop financing Putin’s war” and “End Russian fossil fuel trade.”

The activists are demanding that the Swedish government immediately cease importing Russian gas.

“It is unacceptable that six months after Putin started his bloody invasion of Ukraine, Russian gas is still being allowed to flow into Sweden,” stated activist Karolina Carlsson. “The Swedish parliament has given the government a clear order to stop importing all Russian energy into Sweden and Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson is obliged to fulfill this.”

Gasum spokesperson Olga Väisänen confirmed the activists’ actions, noting they boarded the terminal’s loading cranes and utilized boats in the water. Police intervened to ensure the activists lowered themselves from the cranes.

The Swedish government previously indicated that natural gas accounts for only two percent of all Swedish energy supplies, with approximately half of that originating from Russia.
