Tanel Kiik was appointed as Tallinn’s new Deputy Mayor, assuming the role previously held by Tanel Kieg, who began on September 8th, 2022, at 17:18. Kiik will be responsible for the management of Tallinn’s city assets and transport planning. Kiik was unable to attend the appointment meeting due to illness, according to Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart, who reported that Kiik had contracted COVID-19. Kiik’s previous roles include Deputy Chairman of the Riigikogu since 2012, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office in the State Chancellery from 2016 to 2019, Minister of Social Affairs from 2019 to 2021, and Minister of Health and Labour from 2021 to 2022. Chairman of the City Council, Jevgeni Ossinovsky, wished the new deputy mayor strength in his position. “I am looking forward to the Deputy Mayor’s strategic vision for the development of mobility in the next ten years,” said Ossinovsky. “According to international agreements and Tallinn’s own climate plan, transport emissions must fall quickly and car ownership must decrease. To achieve this, we need to build new tramways, renew the network and promote car-free mobility in other ways.” Tanel Kieg transitioned from the role of Deputy Mayor to Chairman of the Board of Tallinn Transport, a position he assumed under the leadership of Andrei Novikov, who concluded his term as Deputy Mayor on August 12th.
