Roman Kostomarov remains hospitalized and faces a prolonged recovery period following a complex medical condition. The figure skater was admitted to the hospital in January 2023 after experiencing symptoms initially attributed to a common cold. The situation has evolved into a severe case of polyorgan failure, impacting multiple organs including the lungs, liver, and kidneys.

According to Pavel Vorobiev, Professor of the Moscow Medical Academy and a Doctor of Medical Sciences, the polyorgan failure is primarily a consequence of sepsis. Kostomarov has undergone multiple amputations due to developing necrosis, including the removal of toes and fingers. He has also suffered two strokes and continues to battle the condition.

Vorobiev stated that any observed improvements in test results are potentially attributable to medication and offer a degree of hope, but the underlying insufficiency remains a significant concern. He indicated that resolving the polyorgan failure is a lengthy process, and even with successful treatment, complete organ restoration and the elimination of residual effects could take several years. Recovery will require extensive rehabilitation, encompassing medical, dietary, and potentially sanatorium treatments.

Kostomarov’s initial symptoms were not recognized, as he was taking medication for hand pain and dismissed a mild cough as insignificant while continuing to participate in ice shows throughout the New Year period. The doctor confirmed that Kostomarov is affected by this serious condition.
