Oxford University researchers have developed a “world-changing” potential malaria vaccine, according to BBC News. Scientists state the new vaccine holds significant promise. The vaccine is anticipated to receive approval next year.

Developers indicated the vaccine is designed to be affordable and a production agreement is in place to generate over 100 million doses annually. Developing a vaccine for malaria has been a lengthy process, taking over a century due to the parasite’s complex nature and its ability to rapidly move within the body, making immunization challenging. A study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal demonstrated that three doses of the vaccine, followed by a booster shot, provide up to 80 percent protection.

“We believe these data represent the best available for all malaria vaccines,” stated Prof. Adrian Hill. The vaccine’s final approval is pending the publication of results from a study involving 4,800 children, scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.

Malaria has historically been a major global health issue, claiming the lives of over 400,000 people annually, predominantly affecting children.
