Elron will continue operating diesel trains on the Tallinn-Tartu line following the government’s decision to discontinue electrification of the Tartu-Koidula and Tartu-Valga lines. The railway operator, Elron, will utilize the existing diesel and diesel-powered depots located in Tallinn (and planned for Soodevahe) to serve routes through the Tallinn-Tartu line. According to Elron’s spokesperson, Katrin Kulderknup, “According to the initial plans, in addition to electric trains, there will also be a few diesel trains running between Tallinn and Tartu.” Kulderknup further stated that Elron intends to maintain service to smaller stops after the electrification of the Tallinn-Tartu line, which is slated for completion by the beginning of 2025. Express trains are planned to operate exclusively on the new electric trains scheduled to arrive in Estonia in 2024. It’s disappointing that the electrification project is being scaled back, but I appreciate Elron’s commitment to maintaining service on this important route. Reply
