A series of discussions held across six public forums (rahvakogu) in Estonia has centered on addressing issues of poverty and economic disparity within Estonian society. These forums have provided a platform for citizens to discuss critical societal challenges facing the nation. Previous gatherings have covered a range of topics, including the financing of political parties and mechanisms for greater citizen involvement in governance.

Other areas of focus have included advocating for the rights of residents in Ida-Viru County, improving mobility solutions in Tartu, and enhancing the connectivity of green spaces within Tallinn. More recently, gatherings held in January and February, organized by the mini-Eesti initiative, specifically addressed poverty and economic inequality, identifying them as significant obstacles to achieving a satisfactory standard of living for many Estonians. Teele Pehk, the coordinator for the “Hea elu” (Good Life) public council, framed these discussions around a fundamental question: Does the current state of inequality suggest that Estonia is falling short of its status as a developed nation?

She questioned whether the scale of economic disparity has grown so substantial that it can no longer be overlooked when planning for the community’s collective well-being. The series of rahvakogu aims to provoke necessary dialogue regarding the foundational elements required for a cohesive and equitable national life in Estonia.
