New Ski Trail Tested in Tartu Following Abel Family Tribute Tartu, Estonia – A newly constructed ski trail, built as a memorial to ski instructors Erna and Herbert Abel, was recently evaluated for usability following a trial run. The project, part of the “Abelite heritage and summer ski trails” outdoor exhibition, involved collaboration between the Tartu City Museum curator, Maria Usk, and the Supilinn Association chairman, Indrek Kuusk. The trail, constructed from sawdust, was assessed on a day when conditions presented a unique challenge: birch trees exhibited signs of mouse damage and the temperature near the trail reached 19 degrees Celsius. Ivo Kedus, utilizing skis, undertook a measurement of the trail’s suitability. Initial findings suggest the ski trail can be continued and developed. The project aims to honor the legacy of the Abel family and provide a recreational opportunity for the community. The outdoor exhibition, which includes a snowdome, offers a range of activities and educational experiences related to winter sports and the Abel family’s contributions to the sport. Further assessments will be conducted as conditions change, with the goal of determining the long-term viability of this commemorative ski trail.
