Construction at Siuru Site Temporarily Suspended Following Court Order

Tartu’s planned construction at the Siuru site on Uueturu Street has been temporarily halted following a ruling by the administrative court. The court issued a partial grant of a citizen’s initial legal protection request aimed at safeguarding Tartu Central Park. As a result, authorization for excavations and archaeological research at the construction site has been suspended until May 8th.

The decision comes after several days of construction activity surrounding the Siuru area. Aavo Kokk, manager of Siuru, stated that all activities have been conducted in accordance with legal regulations. He emphasized that any delays will inevitably lead to increased financial expenditures for the project.

The citizen’s legal challenge focused on the potential impact of the construction on the surrounding parkland and the need for thorough archaeological investigation prior to commencing work. The court’s order represents a temporary setback for the construction project. The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding development within the city center and the balance between progress and preservation.

Further updates will be provided as the legal proceedings continue.
