Forgotten Plan: Tartu’s ‘Peetrikeskus’ A Missed Opportunity

The original intended location for Tartu’s railway station, dating back to the early 1960s, was situated on the Raadi side of the Emajõgi river. This decision stemmed from a plan to construct the station and associated railway lines directly through the heart of the city of Tartu, with the expectation of establishing a new central district. Historical records indicate that this ambitious project was envisioned as a catalyst for significant urban development.

The area, now designated as Peetrikeskus, reflects the original intention for this location to become the city’s primary commercial and civic hub. Alongside Peetrikeskus, the street Maarjaturg also commemorates this unrealized plan. Had the railway station been built as originally conceived, the core of Tartu would likely have been centered around the Peetrikeskus area.

The project ultimately progressed to the current location, fundamentally altering the city’s layout. The legacy of the original plan remains visible through street names, offering a glimpse into a different vision for Tartu’s future.
