Lily Bulb Consumption Causes Persistent Damage to Gardens

A persistent issue is impacting gardens across Estonia, primarily due to the consumption of lily bulbs by local wildlife. For several years, the problem has resulted in significant damage, particularly to tulip and other flowering bulb displays. Annik and Tanel, a married couple with two country homes, have experienced this issue firsthand.

One residence is located in Võrumaa, amidst expansive fields and forests, while the other is situated in Kiisa village, Harju County. Despite the beauty of spring, the couple has been unable to enjoy the traditional flowering of their gardens for years. The primary culprit is the widespread eating of lily bulbs by animals.

The disappearance of tulips and other bulbs has become a recurring spring event. Experts recommend several preventative measures, including the use of metal mesh to protect vulnerable plants, employing strong-smelling or toxic bulbs to deter consumption, and managing pet access to the garden. The situation highlights a delicate balance within the garden ecosystem and underscores the challenge of protecting one of nature’s most beautiful displays – the flowering bulbs – from persistent damage.
