Viljandi Students Hear Account of Deportation and Family Impact

Local resident and Memento Viljandi association chairman, Ene Juurik, presented to students at the Viljandi gymnasium on the topic of deportation and its lasting consequences. The presentation focused on her family’s experience following the events of March 1949. This year marks nine days of mourning, coinciding with the two-day period of remembrance for the deportation anniversary.

Juurik, who serves as chairman of the Memento Viljandi association, detailed the historical context of the deportation and subsequently discussed how these events fundamentally altered her family’s life trajectory. The session provided students with a direct account of a significant historical event within their community. Juurik spoke candidly about the personal impact of deportation, aiming to foster understanding and remembrance.
