Mayor of Narva Katri Raik expressed satisfaction with the Narva City Council’s decision to decline legal action against the state regarding monuments. Raik, who was unable to attend the meeting due to illness, stated to Postimees that the court case would have created division between Narva and the rest of Estonia. “It would have been a clear confrontation – Narva and the rest of Estonia,” she said.

Raik indicated a desire to shift focus to practical issues, acknowledging lingering emotions and confusion among Narva residents. She previously stated that she would resign if the City Council assigned such a task, a position she affirmed following today’s meeting. “This dispute would have been completely pointless from the perspective of the future of Narva,” Raik explained.

She shared concerns, like many residents of Narva, regarding the tank issue, but emphasized the need to move forward. “We will never achieve a country where we like all the decisions, some of which are difficult to accept,” Raik stated. “Someone might like this Narva tank, someone else might like the second pension step reform.

But we are not leaving our country because of this. And the country and Narva are dear to us, and we need to move on from here.”
