A skeleton discovered in a remote area of Borneo provides new insights into ancient medicine and demonstrates that limb amputations were successfully performed approximately 31,000 years ago. The finding challenges previous assumptions about the earliest practices of surgical intervention. The image of the artist Tebo1, a person who lived on the island of Borneo 31,000 years ago and possessed a missing lower portion of his left leg, was created by artist José García (Garcíartist) and the University of Griffith in Australia.

Scientists believe this discovery rewrites over the history of ancient medicine, confirming that limb amputations were carried out as early as around 31,000 years ago.
