Ice Damage and Water Accumulation Affect Lodi Suur Sume

The Suur Sume, a traditional wooden raft operating on the Emajõgi river, experienced water damage during the recent winter months due to prolonged exposure to the icy river. The raft, which has remained on the waterway for a second consecutive winter, began to accumulate water through gaps in the wooden planks. Priit Jagomägi, the leader of the Emajõe lodja society, successfully addressed the issue yesterday by spraying the accumulated water from the boat’s hull.

The Suur Sume’s continued presence on the Emajõgi is a result of limited approved locations for rafts on Tartu territory. Boatmen sought alternative locations after authorities were unable to designate suitable areas for operation. The situation highlights the challenges faced by traditional raft operators navigating winter conditions.
