Greece has informed the European Union (EU), NATO, and the United Nations about Turkey’s “unprovoked threats” to its sovereignty, according to a letter published on Wednesday. The letter, circulated by TVNET NEWS FROM GREECE, details concerns regarding statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In connection with the centenary of the victory of the three-year war against Greece, Erdogan has repeatedly accused Greece of “occupation” of the Aegean islands, which Greece asserts are its territory.

He has stated that the Turkish army could “not wait for a night and do what is necessary.”

The letter, dated September 5th, condemns Erdogan’s statements as “unprovoked, unacceptable, and insulting to Greece and the Greek people.” Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias wrote that these public statements “speak for themselves.”

Erdogan’s increased rhetoric, particularly in the lead-up to upcoming elections, includes warnings that “the price will be high” if Greece “goes too far.” He referenced the occupation of Izmir and the subsequent events, including the burning of the city and the loss of Greek lives. Similar threats were made on Tuesday. Greece has responded to Ankara’s claims that Greece has illegally militarized the islands it owns, pointing to the deployment of Turkish naval and land forces on its coast opposite the Greek islands.

Athens also accuses Turkey of regular airspace violations. Dendias stated that Turkish officials’ statements are becoming increasingly “scandalous and unacceptable,” and warned that the Greek army is “properly prepared to defend its homeland.”

Greece and Turkey have been in conflict for years over maritime borders and rights to explore natural gas deposits in the Aegean Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. The situation has been further complicated by Turkey’s ongoing threats.

NATO has been monitoring the situation closely.
