Latvia will continue to support Ukraine on the path to EU membership, according to Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a recent working visit to Ukraine. Kalniņa-Lukaševica met with Ukrainian officials to discuss Latvia’s development cooperation project, planned assistance for Ukraine’s restoration, and support for the country’s accession to the European Union. During her meetings, Kalniņa-Lukaševica highlighted that Latvia has invested 21% of all MFA development cooperation funding in Ukraine over the past 15 years, with the majority of this funding allocated this year.

Bilateral development cooperation funding is expected to significantly increase in the coming year. She praised the Ukrainian public administration’s efforts in defending the country and maintaining state functions amidst the ongoing aggression. Kalniņa-Lukaševica is focused on supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, including the restoration of approximately 38,000 damaged objects resulting from Russian aggression, with a priority on housing, schools, hospitals, and energy infrastructure.

Discussions also centered on EU policy regarding Russia, sanctions, the Crimea platform, and combating disinformation. Latvia will continue to provide maximum support to Ukraine, including assistance to the Ukrainian Supreme Court, financial management, the border guard, and educational institutions. Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasized the importance of aligning Ukrainian legislation with EU standards, particularly in areas of rule of law and media freedom, and expressed Latvia’s readiness to provide support through staff training and legislative harmonization.

Participants across all meetings expressed appreciation for Latvia’s ongoing support. The visit included planned meetings with project implementers, international organizations, and Ukrainian officials to further discuss support strategies and priorities.
