In Viljandimaa, a camera captured a stag with a doe. A photograph taken in the region shows a stag positioned near a road with a tree branch resembling a bouquet of wildflowers. The image reveals a stag accompanied by a doe, observed from a distance.

The photograph was taken using a ree-camera, a device commonly employed in the region. Stag hunting season, which typically begins in the second half of August and extends through October in Estonia, is currently underway. During this period, stags utilize vocalizations, often described as whistles and moans, to signal their location and assert dominance over other stags.

These calls can influence the behavior of other males, with weaker stags retreating upon hearing stronger calls. Stag mating behavior includes a distinctive “scratching” of the ground with their hooves and moistening the area with urine, which can facilitate successful impregnation. A single stag can potentially mate with up to seven does.

The typical mating period lasts 10-14 days, with potential for repeated insemination approximately three weeks later to increase the likelihood of pregnancy, particularly in less dominant males.
