Estonian Coup Attempt Foiled in 1934 with Support of Military Leaders

On March 12, 1934, a coup attempt was organized in Estonia with the backing of key military figures, including General-Lieutenant Johan Laidoner and Konstantin Päts. The interim president, General-Lieutenant Johan Laidoner, and Päts initiated the action, resulting in the imposition of martial law across the nation. Following the attempted coup, Laidoner was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Estonian Armed Forces.

This appointment led to immediate measures, including the prohibition of public demonstrations and the dissolution of the Estonian National Defence League. Furthermore, the publication of materials associated with the National Defence League was suspended. The operation was largely driven by opposition to the National Defence League, with Marxist elements playing a significant role.

However, this opposition ultimately fragmented and lost its influence within Estonian society. The attempted coup failed to achieve its objectives, demonstrating the resistance faced by those involved. The events of March 12, 1934, involved significant figures within the Estonian government and highlighted a period of political instability.
